When selecting a PDA, consider the following :-
Do I need to scan barcodes ?
Choose the correct scanner for the purpose, then choose the PDA to suit.
There are three types of barcode scanners for PDAs - basic CMOS scanners can be used where the lighting and barcode quality are good, class 1 laser scanners recommended for speed, and class 2 laser scanners for outdoor use. They connect to a SDIO slot, a CF slot, or by using bluetooth comms.
The slot should be at the end of the PDA, not on the side or hidden under the battery. Some new models have a 'micro' SD slot, however these won't accept the SD Barcode scanner.
How will the PDA connect to the PC ?
PDAs come standard with a USB cable for PC connection. Whenever you need to transfer files or data, or access the internet, you can connect the PDA to the Computer USB port.
Do I need built in Wireless Network ?
Wireless Network (802.11b) allows computer communications without the need to 'plug in'. Your computer will need to have a wireless access point or router. This is not standard on all PDAs. ( rx1950, hx2490, hx2700 )
Do I need Bluetooth ?
Cordless barcode scanners, portable printers, headsets, and other devices may use a wireless communication method called Bluetooth. This is not standard on all PDAs, so if you need to communicate with Bluetooth devices, select a PDA with this option. ( hx2190, hx2490, hx2700, hw6515e )
